About North Carolina Association of Educators

The North Carolina Association of Educators (NCAE) is building a movement to transform and expand public education in our state to ensure all students have access to quality public education that provides them with an opportunity to meet their full potential.

NCAE is the second fastest growing NEA affiliate in the country - making moves from the Sandhills to the Mountains to win the schools North Carolina students deserve. And embracing comprehensive campaigns to bring public education stakeholders together to win unprecedented wins for public school staff, students and parents.

NCAE’s four year strategic plan prioritizes growing our union, members leading professional practices and standards and restoring the promise of public schools and our democracy against the interests that seek to privatize our schools and continue the practice that the powerful select their electorate.

Responsibilities Include:

Building School-Based Power

• Collaborate with members to identify key issues and opportunities for organizing with educators and families within their schools

• Identify, recruit, and develop members, parents and community leaders who identify as leaders in the union and are building power in their community to win improvements in public education

• Conduct one on one coaching conversations and trainings to enhance members, parents and community leaders’ ability to organize

• Teach and ensure that all organizers and member leaders are having community mapping organizing conversations with every new and current member and allied parent or community member

Building District-Wide Community Power

• Assist members in forming a district wide organizing committee of parents and community leaders that develop campaigns and action plans

• Mobilize parents and community partners for rallies, petitions, decision maker delegations and school board/county commissioner meetings

• Work with local leadership, members, families, allies and staff to power map community institutions and determine priorities for outreach

• Coordinate with local leadership and other stakeholders to align campaigns with broader organizational goals

Building State-Wide Power

• Contribute to statewide organizing initiatives such as meetings, trainings, blitzes, canvasses and more

Data Tracking and Management

• Make assessments, track data and assignments

• Maintain accurate records of organizing activities, member and community engagement and campaign progress

• Regularly update and input community mapping worksheets completed from members and parents at each worksite

Skills and Qualifications:

Required Qualifications

• Strong interpersonal skills: a deep understanding of trust-building, maintaining strong relationships, and the ability to communicate with people across difference

• Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to be adaptable and flexible in a fast-paced environment

• Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously, meeting frequent and tight deadlines

• An excellent collaborator and team player

• Commitment to the values of NCAE, public education and the labor movement

• A willingness to work nights and weekends when needed

• Driver’s license and insured vehicle

Preferred Qualifications

• 1 year of experience as a member leader or staff organizer with experience recruiting new members and/or building organizing committees in labor, community, or electoral organizing environments
