The Role

We are seeking a highly motivated Chemist or Materials Scientist with deep expertise in fluorescent molecule synthesis and formulation to help develop a library of stable, multiplexable fluorescent inks. This role will focus on synthesizing and optimizing fluorescent materials—organic and/or inorganic—and translating them into printable, stable ink formulations for use in our molecular data storage platform.

Responsibilities

• Synthesize and characterize organic fluorophores and inorganic fluorescent nanoparticles (e.g., quantum dots).
• Develop and evaluate materials with fluorescence emissions across the near-infrared (NIR), and ultraviolet (UV) spectra.
• Investigate mechanisms of fluorescence fading and develop strategies to enhance stability and environmental robustness (e.g., performance on dry substrates, under ambient light, etc).
• Formulate functional inks using appropriate surfactants, dispersants, and binders to ensure stability, printability, and consistency.
• Optimize formulations for compatibility with inkjet printing systems and non-biological substrates/environments.
• Work collaboratively with a cross-functional team of scientists and engineers to integrate formulations into our encoding pipeline.
• Design and execute experiments with a focus on speed, rigor, and real-world applicability.

Requirements

• M.S or Ph.D. in Chemistry or Materials Science
• Hands-on experience with the synthesis of both organic fluorophores and inorganic fluorescent nanoparticles.
• Demonstrated experience with fluorescent materials outside the visible spectrum (NIR and/or UV emission) .
• Strong understanding of fluorescence mechanisms and degradation pathways in non-biological and dry environments.
• Practical experience with ink formulation, including knowledge of additives (surfactants, dispersants, binders) and rheology.
• Familiarity with inkjet printing or similar deposition techniques.
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills; able to work in a fast-paced, interdisciplinary environment.
• Preferred: 1–2 years of experience in a startup, translational research, or product development environment.
