The Rachel Carson Science Journalism Fellow at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology is a one-year position designed for early-career journalism professionals to gain experience in science journalism and outreach for public audiences, as well as to contribute to undergraduate teaching and mentorship. This is an on-site position in Ithaca, New York, with a hybrid work arrangement after orientation and training. The fellow will work with editors, artists, designers, multimedia producers, and multidisciplinary experts to generate stories about the lab’s science, conservation, and outreach impact, and engage readers in birding, science, and conservation. Responsibilities include developing story angles, reporting, writing, revising on deadline, pitching story ideas, fact checking, editing, content management, and collaborating on story enhancements such as data visualizations and multimedia. The fellow will co-teach an undergraduate pass/fail course in science journalism and mentor 1–3 undergraduate interns. The position requires a bachelor's or graduate degree in journalism or equivalent experience, with no more than two years of professional journalism or writing experience. Candidates must have the ability to write quickly, clearly, and concisely, experience generating science stories for nonscientific audiences, a learning mindset, and a collaborative spirit. Experience with data visualizations, multimedia, interest in birds or nature, and teaching or mentorship experience are helpful. The position is full-time (40 hours/week), temporary for one year with potential extension, based at the Lab of Ornithology approximately 3 miles from Cornell’s main campus. The role supports a culture of belonging and psychological health, and follows a hybrid work model with 0–2 days remote and 3–5 days in person per week. Visa sponsorship and relocation assistance are not available.
