Summary The closing date of this announcement has changed to Friday, September 26, 2025. The Podiatrist is an integral member of the Surgery Section medical staff. He/she is responsible for performing podiatry procedures on patients referred to the Surgery Service by Primary Care and Specialty providers. Responsibilities VA offers a comprehensive total rewards package. The Podiatrist properly utilizes Reusable Medical Equipment (RME) per manufacturer's guidelines. Compliance would be evidenced by observation of proper care and use as well as history of repairs to said equipment due to improper use. Accuracy and reliability are required in the treatment of patients to alleviate the need for unnecessary procedures with increased risk. This enhances the quality of medical care to the patient population in this facility. The physician will observe normal safety precautions for protection in hazardous patient care environments with regards to biological contamination, i.e. universal precautions. The physician will also observe precautions with respect to physical and electrical hazards. Duties include but are not limited to: Performing initial histories and physical examinations on inpatients and outpatients. Providing ongoing outpatient and inpatient care for assigned patients. Screening outpatients to determine need for further care. Prescribing medications within defined scope of practice. Ordering diagnostic studies such as laboratory tests, x-rays, electrocardiograms (EKGs). Carrying out health promotion and disease prevention activities. Drawing blood specimens for testing and performing other comparable lab procedures. Initiating and expediting requests for consultations and scheduling special tests and studies. i. Making interim summaries of the patients medical record. Dictating history and physicals, which are countersigned by a surgeon, admission notes, and discharge summaries. Dictating notes on procedures performed for which the podiatrist is responsible through participating in the care of veteran patients in the Operating Room. Mixing, starting and administering IV solutions/medications. Seeing patients in the Urgent Care Center. Providing education and counseling of patients and families in preventive care, medical conditions, and use of prescribed treatments and drugs. Responsible for patient care activities for the adult and geriatric patient. Responsible for understanding the aging process and to modify treatment plans to accommodate the changes that occur with aging. Assist with collateral duties within the surgery service. Qualifications Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Podiatrist Basic Requirements Degree as a doctor of podiatric medicine, or its equivalent, from a school of podiatric medicine approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs. Approved schools are United States schools of podiatric medicine approved by the Council on Podiatry Education of the American Podiatry Association in the year in which the degree was granted. ~AND~ Completed, or currently completing, residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. VA Podiatrists involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status. Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the accrediting bodies for graduate medical education, the Council on Podiatric Medical Education, in the list published for the year the residency was completed, or (2) Other residencies and training experiences, or their equivalents, which the local Professional Standards Board determines to have provided an applicant with appropriate professional training. ~AND~ Currently hold, or will hold, a full and unrestricted license to practice Podiatry in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States or in the District of Columbia.
